Those three numbers cover almost everything a homeowner needs to plan around. Everything else depends on the weather, the mix, and how thick the slab is.

Drying and Curing Are Not the Same Thing

Concrete does not harden by drying out. It hardens through a chemical reaction between cement and water called hydration.

That reaction needs moisture to keep running. A slab that loses water too quickly ends up weaker, because hydration stalls before it finishes.

This is why a good crew mists the surface, covers it, or sprays a curing compound after the finish. Keeping water in the slab is the entire job during the first week.

The Standard Concrete Cure Timeline

Assume a normal mix and moderate temperatures for this schedule. Cold or extreme heat will shift it.

Hot, Dry, Windy Days

Cold Nights and Late Season Pours

Below about 10 degrees the reaction slows down noticeably. Below freezing it can stop, and water in a green slab that freezes will destroy the surface permanently.

Late season work in Manitoba typically means insulated blankets, heated enclosures, hot water in the mix, or an accelerating admixture. Expect the walk on time to stretch from 24 hours to two or three days.

This matters most for exterior flatwork like a new driveway slab, walkways, and front entry steps, where the surface takes the brunt of the weather.

What to Do During the First Week

Most cure failures come from the homeowner side, not the pour. A few simple rules protect the investment.

  • Keep vehicles off for a full 7 days. Point loads from tires do more damage than evenly spread weight.
  • Keep pets and kids off for the first 48 hours. Paw prints at hour 10 are permanent.
  • Do not park a heavy truck, trailer, or dumpster on it before day 14.
  • Skip the pressure washer. High pressure on green concrete strips the surface paste.
  • Never use de icing salt in the first winter. Fresh concrete is far more vulnerable to scaling.
  • Leave the curing compound or plastic in place until your contractor says otherwise.

Interior work behaves differently. A basement floor pour cures in a stable indoor environment, so timing is more predictable, though moisture testing still matters before flooring goes down.

When Can You Seal It?

Wait the full 28 days before applying most sealers. Sealing early traps moisture and can cause blushing, peeling, or a cloudy finish.

The exception is a cure and seal product applied at the time of the pour, which is designed for that stage. For decorative work such as stamped patterns or coloured surfaces, follow the manufacturer schedule closely, since colour reacts to moisture during cure. Signs Something Went Wrong

A properly cured slab looks uniform and feels solid. Watch for these early warnings instead.

  • Dusting. A chalky powder on the surface means it dried too fast.

  • Blotchy dark and light patches. Often uneven curing or an inconsistent subgrade.
